What is back pain?

The cause of back pain is to be found in basic physical principles. To function correctly, the spine must be supple and elastic. As the spine becomes less supple, stresses begin to concentrate at particular points during activity. Back pain, stretched ligaments, excessive wear and tear and disc injuries are the natural consequence of this overstressing.

Osteopaths are trained to assess the strength and flexibility of muscles, ligaments and tendons. Treatment is designed to correct individual mechanical problems and to help prevent recurrences. A Health Department report recommends treatment as early as possible after the onset of symptoms.

Trouble with your back does not simply produce back pain, but may also cause more remote symptoms such as pain in the buttocks, groin or legs (sciatica), brought on by pressure on nerve roots. This is due to a mechanical disturbance in the mechanical function of the whole body.
